Yokogawa Electric Corporation continues to present to Gulf markets its sophisticated products and services in the fields of industrial automation and control (IQ) and test and measurement among other segments.

The Japanese company announced recently it has developed a multi-protocol wireless adaptor that enables wired field instruments or analytical sensors to be used as ISA100 wireless devices.

It will release models in May and July that support communications based on the Hart and RS485 Modbus standards. To facilitate the introduction of field wireless systems in plants, Yokogawa plans to release additional models that will cover other standards.

The innovation will interest Gulf manufacturers in the latest advancement in field wireless systems which enable field devices and the host-level monitoring, control and others systems in a plant to communicate wireless with each other.

When the multi-protocol wireless adaptor is mounted on a wired field instrument or analytical sensor, the instrument or sensor is able to function as an ISA100 wireless device. It may be used with any type of wired field instrument or analytical sensor commonly used in plants, including those used to monitor temperature, pressure, liquid level, or vibration, or to detect gas and is compatible with both Yokogawa devices and devices from other vendors. By giving customers a greater range of field instruments and analytical sensors to choose from, Yokogawa expects that this multi-protocol wireless adaptor will greatly facilitate the introduction of field wireless systems.

Target industries are oil and gas, LNG, refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, power, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, foods, and iron and steel.

Another announcement by Yokogawa is bound to interest Gulf production facilities. It will begin offering soon new solutions for optimising plant operations in the oil and gas, petrochemical and other industries. These solutions will be provided as part of Yokogawa’s VigilantPlant Services suite to support safe, stable and highly efficient plant operations. The technology underlying these solutions is Yokogawa’s newly developed Mirror Plant online simulator.

This simulator can visualise the internal state of a plant process and make near-term predictions on plant behaviour. An industry first, the stimulator operates in synchronisation with the plant control system and features the good performance required in commercial plants.

Yokogawa, meanwhile has obtained the ISASecure Embedded Device Security Assurance (Edsa) certification for its ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system.

Companies in the oil, petrochemical, power and other industries are increasingly vigilant about cyber crime and cyber warfare and are being careful to check a product’s cyber security features before purchasing it. The ISASecure Edsa certicfication for the ProSafe –RS system assures customers of its high reliability.

 

SAUDI CONTRACTS

Yokogawa subsidiary Yokogawa Middle East & Africa is contracted to supply the control system for the SWRO-4 Desalination Plant, which is being built in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, by the Power & Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq).  The plant under construction, SWRO-4, will utilise reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to desalinate seawater and will be able to produce 100,000 cu m of potable water per day.

Yokogawa will deliver the Centum VP integrated production control system and the Plant Resource Manager (PRM) integrated device management package, the latter of which will be used for the monitoring and online diagnosis of the instrumentation devices in this plant. In addition, Yokogawa will deliver an operator training system to improve operator performance. Yokogawa Middle East & Africa is responsible for the entire project, including the engineering and commissioning of these products. Delivery is scheduled for this year and the plant will start operation at the end of September 2014.

Yokogawa Electric Corporation received an order to supply control systems and operator training simulators  for the Shoaiba II combined cycle power plant  in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for Saudi Electricity Company. The Shoaiba II combined cycle power plant has 10 gas turbines and two steam turbines with a combined output of 1,200 MW. The order was received from Daelim Industrial Company and was delivered through Yokogawa Middle East.

The solution comprised a Centum VP control system and a simulator for training operators under complex simulated plant operating conditions. The Centrum VP control system  will accomplish integrated control of heat recovery steam generators and gas turbines. Yokogawa Saudi Arabia was responsible for project execution including engineering testing installation and commissioning.

In October 2012 Yokogawa Saudi Arabia and Saudi Aramco signed a Corporate Procurement Agreement (CPA) that encompasses all the services Yokogawa provides to the oil giant. The CPA covers equipment supply, project management, engineering, spare parts and maintenance services, simplifying greatly the process by which Saudi Aramco purchases process automation equipment
from Yokogawa.

Yokogawa has doubled the size of its facilities in the Dhahran Techno Valley. The expanded facilities allow Yokogawa to manufacture specific components of its control systems and to strengthen its research and development activities.

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has received the Frost & Sullivan 2014 Global Enabling Technology Leadership Award in the wireless solutions category. The award is presented to companies around the world that are best-in-class in a specific category.

Field wireless systems enable a plant’s field devices and host-level monitoring and control systems to communicate wirelessly with each other. This has numerous advantages such as allowing the placement of field instruments or analytical sensors in difficult to wire locations, which eliminates the need for cables to connect devices and reduces installation costs.

Yokogawa released the world’s first ISA100.11a1 compliant wireless system devices and wireless pressure and temperature transmitters in July 2010, and the company continues to enhance its lineup of wireless solutions. In accordance with the Wireless Anywhere concept, which was announced in April 2013, Yokogawa is seeking to promote the plant-wide use of field wireless systems by developing new ISA100 Wireless 2 devices. In December 2013, the company started providing a wireless communications module with a built-in antenna that can help field device manufacturers significantly shorten the time needed for developing wireless solutions. Later this year, the company also plans to release a multi-protocol wireless adaptor that will enable wired field instruments or analytical sensors to be used as ISA100 Wireless devices.

Frost & Sullivan selected Yokogawa for this award because of the company’s efforts to develop ISA100 Wireless solutions that enable high-reliability, openness, and interoperability. In selecting the award recipient, Frost & Sullivan evaluated companies based on whether they enabled the creation of new products, enhanced current products, enabled new applications, had potential for market acceptance, and had a breadth of access to technology. Yokogawa was recognised for making a superior contribution in developing innovative field wireless solutions.
